South Brisbane local, Rachael Turner, is forging a career as one of Queensland’s most up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the building and construction industry. Formally trained as a classical pianist, Rachael took a leap of faith to start Front Porch Properties, a construction and design company making a big impact in the industry. Having managed her own successful music school for over 10 years, Rachael without any formal training or experience, threw caution to the wind to follow her childhood passion of construction and design.

In 2013, Rachael spent months researching and learning the market before purchasing a run-down home in South Brisbane with the intention of flipping it. With natural talent, hard work and a seemingly effortless flair for style, the neglected home was brought back to life and sold 12 months later with Rachael turning over an impressive profit. The renovation ignited Rachael’s passion for building and construction which quickly evolved into a career, renovating and building homes for others. “I really believe I was born to be doing the work I do now. I love the construction industry and I am committed to contribute to the industry the best way I can” she said.

In 2016, Rachael realised that whilst she had extensive practical experience, she needed formal training to take her business to the next level. She enrolled in a Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funded Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40110) through TAFE Queensland SkillsTech who provided flexible training that suited her busy lifestyle. Rachael said this training has extended her knowledge, boosted her confidence and taught her many valuable skills.

Rachael has already set up her company as a QBCC licensed construction business, and has also acquired her own personal builder’s license. Her future goals also include providing aid to construction projects in third world countries. “I want to be, not just a successful builder, but one that gives back and makes an impact in the lives of others”, said Rachael.

Rachael’s story and projects have gained much media attention having been featured in a number of lifestyle magazines including Home Renovation, Handyman, Home Beautiful, Inside Out, Queensland Homes and The Collective.

In addition to a successful career, Rachael was recently named the Vocational Student of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards. Rachael was nominated by TAFE Queensland SkillsTech and will now go on to compete at the Australian Training Awards held in Canberra in November.
