In late 2016, TAFE Queensland SkillsTech and WestSide Corporation Pty Ltd (WestSide) joined forces to provide a remote training solution in gas pipeline operations at the Meridian gasfields in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The partnership aimed to recognise the existing skills and experience of WestSide gas field operators under the Certificate III in Gas Supply Industry Operations (UEG30114) qualification, and provide gap training for skills needing further development.
Westside currently operate the Meridian gasfields in a joint venture with Mitsui E&P Australia, holding a 51 per cent interest. Joint venture interests with QGC and Mitsui E&P Australia in Paranui, Tiblrook and Mount Saint Martin are also in development with WestSide holding 25.5 per cent.
TAFE Queensland SkillsTech staff recently visited the Bowen Basin site to gain first-hand knowledge of the daily duties and tasks in order to map these skills against the Certificate III in Gas Supply Industry Operations, and establish training plans to build competencies. The on-site supervision and mentoring provided by WestSide, coupled with a tailored training plan will provide their operators with transferable skills recognised not just Australia-wide, but globally.
TAFE Queensland SkillsTech General Manager, Mary Campbell, remarked that “TAFE Queensland SkillsTech is proud to assist WestSide to secure a significant foothold in Queensland’s rich CSG market and support their investment in workforce development and field safety personnel and contractors”.
This project remains on track for completion in early 2018 with all participants eager to gain this valuable qualification.
