TAFE Queensland SkillsTech at forefront of rail training in Queensland

The Centre of Excellence is equipped to meet this demand, by providing rail related training and assessment across a range of training packages both on- site and workplace delivery.

TAFE Queensland SkillsTech is a premier provider of rail and rail related training in Queensland with the only simulated rail work environment of its kind in the state.

The Queensland Rail Centre of Excellence was developed in partnership with TAFE Queensland SkillsTech and Queensland Rail. Queensland Rail built the infrastructure of Queensland’s extensive rail network that stretches over 6,500 kilometres of track, employing over 6,000 staff.

The purpose-built Centre of Excellence spans across 1.5 hectares and consists of four training tracks (traction and overhead, signalling and track maintenance training), with future plans for sand pits that include boom gates, bridging structures and lay down areas. The Centre of Excellence also features classrooms and office space for theory based learning.

With a current resurgence in the Australian rail sector as an economical means of transport for both people and commodities, the industry is experiencing a period of growth. This has resulted in the construction of new rail infrastructure and the need for additional signalling systems. This growth will also result in an increased demand for automation and telecommunication roles that require higher-level skills.

The latest Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council Annual Environment Scan has identified that occupational shortages across train drivers, supervisors and project managers, rail truck workers, rail technicians, plant operators, rail engineers, team leaders and rail trainers and assessors are expected, and emphasizes the urgent need for appropriately trained workforces to fill these shortage areas.

The Centre of Excellence is equipped to meet this demand, by providing rail related training and assessment across a range of training packages both on- site and workplace delivery. The centre will allow for rail-specific fields of expertise to be introduced and also supports existing trade-training requirements in electrotechnology (rail traction), engineering, metalwork, fabrication, automation and signalling and telecommunications training packages.

TAFE Queensland also offer commercial training opportunities and currently deliver training to Queensland Rail, Aurizon, Keolis Downer Gold Coast (light rail) and other third party rail contractors and commercial supply chain and international rail-centric organisations.
